Fun activities in Austin
Austin is famous for having a lot of stuff going on. How can you find out about it? How can you access it? This post will brainstorm different activities that I enjoy, and give links where you can find more information. Search any of them in google maps and click on "BUS" to figure out the best bus route to get there.
Improvised theater can be really fun. There are many theaters, like the Hideout, the Cold Town Theater, and Salvage Vanguard. You can watch hilarious performances, and you can sign up to take an improv theater class -- most of these are attended by American English-speakers who are practicing to speak spontaneously.
There are lots of outdoor places to swim in Austin. Barton Springs and Deep Eddie are two of the most popular places to swim in Austin. They are both natural water, but Barton Springs has more plants. Big Stacie is a free pool in South Austin, and there are lots of pools at apartment complexes.
There are also places to canoe, paddle board, and kayak. Town Lake/ Lady Bird Lake is very popular and convenient, but there is also Lake Travis.
Live music and dancing is hugely popular. There are almost too many venues to mention! Just go to Austin Chronicle and investigate for yourself the style of music you prefer. Also, there are free outdoor concerts at the Bob Bullock Museum and at the Long Center that sound really fun.
There are dance classes too. The Women's Federation Club has ballroom dancing, UT Salsa Dance Club and Ruta Maya have salsa dancing, and Dallas Night Club has the traditional Texas Two-Step.
There is also live theater in Austin. The Zachary Scott Theater is near the river, and it is very professional and well-regarded.
Bookstores, record stores, and video rental places can be fun local businesses to hang out in and learn about local culture. Book People and Waterloo Records.
Cinemas can be fun in any town, but Austin has some particularly unique ones. Alamo Draft House has three locations, and it's really fun. The Paramount is also great for classic movies and concerts.
